BlueSnö - Eva Melhuish- Christmas Cards, Gift Wrap, Gift Tags and Greeting Cards

Welcome to Blue Snö!

I’d like to introduce my new company ‘Blue Snö’ with a collection of my Scandinavian Christmas cards, gift wrap, gift tags and greeting cards, a mixture of new designs and the revival of some old favourites.

Snö is the Swedish name for snow and the company name comes from my love of painting Swedish snow scenery under dark starry night skies.

The breathtaking beauty of the Swedish landscape with it’s ancient forests, lakes and wildlife have always inspired me to paint and is one of the reasons I became an illustrator.

Tomte

The little Santa in my pictures is the Swedish Tomte, inspired by my childhood memories living in Sweden and my love of Scandinavian folklore.

The Tomte is shown in various forms but is traditionally described as a little old man of small stature with a long white beard and wearing a red pointed hat.

According to tradition and folklore, the Tomte lives unseen on farms, homesteads and houses, secretly acting as their guardian, helping out with the animals and general chores, mainly during autumn and winter.

At Christmas time he is particularly active and in later tradition are involved with delivering gifts on Christmas Eve.

They do however demand respect and this is especially important at Christmas time, when a bowl of hot rice porridge (Julgröt) should be left out for them on Christmas Eve. This is to thank the tomte for his help throughout the year and to show appreciation and respect for him. (Oh, and there must be a good spoonful of butter on the porridge too, otherwise he will not be happy!)

The Tomte is generally a solitary creature and can be known to be a little grumpy, but if treated well, the he will bring good fortune to the farmstead or house, but treated badly he can cause trouble and bring misfortune...

However, I like to think of my Tomte as a kind, happy and helpful character who is not at all grumpy!

About My Work

All of the artwork shown is designed and illustrated by me and hand painted with watercolour and gouache, then scanned in for printing. They are printed on high quality card and paper with an uncoated finish, keeping the colours clear and vibrant.

I have chosen the beautiful pure white card for it’s slightly textured surface as it shows the colours perfectly and is a pleasure to write on!

All of these products are created and printed in the UK.
